Day four of National Safeguarding Adults Week – Modern Day Slavery

Welcome to day four of National Safeguarding Adults Week – the aim of which is to create a time where we can all focus on safeguarding adults – so we can be better, together.

Today we are be focusing on raising awareness of Modern Day Slavery.

Help us to raise awareness of this key issue facing adults at risk by:

• learning about the issue from our resources and information
• sharing these resources within your organisation and with the people you meet
• using the #SafeguardingAdultsWeek hashtag on social media to share our resources and let us know what you’re doing
• holding safeguarding events and training
• Share our MSP NSW briefing DAY 4 MDS.

In June this year we supported a Modern Day Slavery week of action– activity across this week included:

• execution of Warrants in relation to cuckooing and massage parlours
• awareness raising in midwifery services
• promotion via community radio by AFRUCA
• a focus on employment practices via Business Networks
• a Community Safety Partnership van at Gorton and Harpurhey Markets
• awareness raising at the Chinese Consulate.

Our Modern Day Slavery campaign toolkit includes a range of resources to support awareness raising activities around modern slavery and trafficking.  These include briefings, aimed at the workforce and the public, which can be used to support discussion and awareness raising around this important issue and details of other targeted campaign materials

What can you do?
Whether you are a strategic leader or a front-line worker, protecting victims and safeguarding people from harm is all our responsibility – ask yourselves these questions.

As an organisation:        

• Do you actively raise awareness of modern slavery and human trafficking amongst staff and those they engage with?
• Do your staff know how recognise the signs of modern slavery and know what to do when they do?
• Are your services providing the right support and intervention for victims, at the right time?
• Do your services positively contribute to prevention and disruption?
• Are you supporting connectivity across services, to promote understanding, knowledge and sharing best practice?

As an individual:

• Do you know what modern slavery and human trafficking is?
• Do you know the signs of modern slavery?
• Do you know how to refer possible victims to services to safeguard them – for example the National Referral Mechanism or the Independent Child Trafficking Advocacy?
• Do you share your knowledge and expertise with your colleagues and partners?
• Are you doing everything you can to safeguard victims and prevent future harm?
• Do you know what services working to support and safeguard victims?
• Are you up to date on policy and practice?
• Do you think about your own activity in your community?
