Child in Need – resources for all

All Child in Need cases open to Manchester City Council (MCC) Children’s Services must have a Child in Need (CiN) Plan – the  MCC Child in need guidance document for staff (Nov 2017) prescribes CiN Checkpoints to enable Team Managers to oversee case progress and outcomes.

The MCC Child in need guidance should be read in conjunction with the relevant GMSP procedures

Whilst this is MCC guidance, CiN Meetings provide an opportunity for the child, parents/carers and agencies to jointly identify needs, agree the most effective inter-agency services to meet these and ensure they are delivered.

Advice for parents and carers

A Child In Need meeting (CiN) or ‘Section 17’ meeting is a family meeting where parents or carers, the child (where age appropriate) and professionals meet together to share information, identify need and agree the most effective inter-agency plan to meet those needs with measurable outcomes for the child identified within stated timescales

This may be because there have been concerns about your child/ren which have resulted in an assessment being completed by a social worker. This is known as a ‘Section 17’ assessment and has concluded that your child/ren require extra help from professionals to achieve or maintain a reasonable standard of health and/or development.

Everyone involved with your family gets together to agree a plan for this and everyone has their own roles and responsibilities in making sure that plan succeeds in an agreed amount of time. It is one step up from a ‘Team around the child / family’ (TAC/TAF) meeting but one step down from a child protection meeting.
