Leaving care – advice for young people

If you are a young person leaving care you may need help moving into adulthood – living independently and making your own decisions.

Manchester City Council (MCC) has a responsibility to you up to the age of 21; or up to the age of 25 if they are supporting you in education or training, or if you are disabled.

It is MCC’s responsibility to make sure care leavers know what services they can expect to receive. Their local offer provides information about all the services, legal rights and support that is available to care leavers in Manchester.

For information aimed at young care leavers visit the Manchester City Council website at www.manchester.gov.uk/care_leavers

Gov.uk
The government website page ‘Leaving foster or local authority care’ sets out how your local council must provide you with support until you’re 25 – find out more on their website at www.gov.uk/leaving-foster-or-local-authority-care

Children’s Commissioner
The Children’s Commissioner website at www.childrenscommissioner.gov.uk  has lots of information for young people about leaving care including:

Child Law Advice and LawStuff
The Child Law website at childlawadvice.org.uk  explains the duties of the local authority to provide services and support for children who are currently looked after or have been looked after once they reach the age of 16.

The LawStuff website at  lawstuff.org.uk is dedicated to providing advice and assistance to young people.
