Online learning with other providers – free to all

There are a number of online learning tools on safeguarding issues that are available to practitioners, volunteers and the public.

The following online courses (listed A to Z) are provided by external organisations free of charge and can be accessed directly via their website – please note you may be required to register with some providers.

Adult safeguarding – SCIE

SCIE provide a range of online learning resources. Use of these resources and importing them into learning management systems for educational purposes is freely permitted. Topics covered in the online resources include:

  • adult care and support
  • understanding and delivering person centred care
  • families and parental issues
  • communication and management skills.

Anti-Bullying Alliance free online training

As part of Anti-Bullying Alliance’s ‘All Together programme’ they have developed a suite of free online training for anyone that works with children and young people. The programme was particularly developed to reduce levels of bullying of disabled children and those with special educational needs (SEN) but it applies to all children. The training is free to complete online from any computer/tablet.

CEOP / Thinkuknow 

Thinkuknow offers a range of training courses for those who work directly with children and young people; Keeping Children Safe Online (KCSO) is e-learning in partnership with the NSPCC, the Thinkuknow Introduction Course and the CEOP Ambassador Course.

CSE: PACE

Keeping Them Safe: online learning for Parents & Carers is a free package for parents and carers that explains how to identify the signs of CSE and protect children. This course has been designed by Parents against Child Sexual Exploitation (PACE) and has been accessed by more than 29,000 parents and professionals (as of March 2016).

Although the course is aimed at parents, practitioners and volunteers will also find this 20-30 minute online learning session a valuable source of information to:

  • find out more about child sexual exploitation
  • learn the signs and indicators of when a child might be being exploited
  • understand the impact child sexual exploitation can have on families
  • know what to do if you suspect a child might be at risk of this abuse.

Dementia

NHS Health Education Dementia e-learning sessions have been designed to support health and social care staff to recognise, understand, assess and effectively support people living with dementia and their families, ensuring high-quality, compassionate dementia care.

Disability Matters

Disability Matters offers free online learning packages to enable organisations, workers and volunteers to develop the communication and problem-solving skills required to engage confidently with disabled children and young people.

Domestic Homicide Review

The Home Office offers domestic homicide review online learning for front line practitioners who will be taking part in domestic homicide reviews. The course has two modules:

  • Module 1: introduction to the domestic homicide review process
  • Module 2: the chairperson’s responsibilities and the overview report.

Early Help

Manchester City Council are committed to supporting partner agencies who undertake Early Help Assessments.

As part of their shared training and information resources, an Early Help Assessment e-learning course is now available.

Currently free of charge to partners, this training opportunity will provide:

  • a comprehensive insight into the Early Help Assessment process and wider aspects of the Early Help Journey; and
  • an opportunity to acquire (post course) accreditation as an Early Help Assessment Practitioner.

Female Genital Mutilation

Female genital mutilation (FGM) refers to procedures that intentionally alter or cause injury to the female genital organs for non-medical reasons. This practice is illegal in the UK.

The Home Office offers free online training for front line professionals in identifying and helping girls at risk of FGM.

This course is useful for anyone who is interested in gaining an overview of FGM, particularly front line staff in healthcare, police, border force and children’s social care.

Forced Marriage

This course has been developed with the Forced Marriage Unit of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office and Home Office. It aims to raise awareness, challenge perceptions and inform practitioners of the correct actions to take should they suspect someone is at risk.

FutureLearn  offers a diverse selection of free courses from leading universities and cultural institutions around the world. These are delivered one step at a time, and are accessible on mobile, tablet and desktop, so you can fit learning around your life.

Gender nonconforming young people 

Working in partnership with GIRES (the Gender Identity Research and Education Society), Surrey and Borders Partnership NHS Foundation Trust has created an online learning course to help healthcare and other staff understand the needs of gender nonconforming young people.

The course is free, is easily accessible online and takes around 45 minutes to complete. It is designed for staff of all levels and disciplines and provides an optional test, as well as a certificate of completion.

It includes an introduction to gender non-conformity, advice on how to create supportive environments for gender non-conforming young people and critical information about medical interventions and front line support.

Home Office Free Online Training

The Home Office offers a range of free online learning courses through the Virtual College, these include:

Identifying sexual behaviours (Brookes Guide)

This innovative resource from Brookes helps practitioners who work with children and young people to identify, assess and respond appropriately to sexual behaviours. It uses a ‘traffic light tool’ to categorise sexual behaviours, to increase understanding of healthy sexual development and to distinguish this from harmful behaviour.

By identifying sexual behaviours as GREEN, AMBER or RED, practitioners across different agencies can work to the same criteria when making decisions and protect children and young people with a unified approach.

This resource has been designed to help practitioners think through their decisions and does not replace organisational procedures or assessment frameworks.

Knowledge for Healthcare blog

Knowledge for Healthcare have a range of resources available via the Learning Zone and Knowledge Management sections of their blog.

Modern slavery training

This government resource is designed to share examples of training products available to public sector professionals and other individuals that might come across victims to help raise awareness, better spot the signs and increase confidence in reporting modern slavery when potential cases are encountered.

Increased awareness and reporting helps law enforcement to tackle the perpetrators of modern slavery as well as protecting victims.

The resource contains basic awareness raising materials. For many professionals more advanced or bespoke training will be appropriate and the materials here are not intended to be the extent of the training required by any sector.

NSPCC Child protection and safeguarding e-learning courses

The NSPCC has a range of online safeguarding and child protection training courses for anyone working or volunteering with children and young people.

Open University

The Open University offers free online courses on their website at www.open.edu/openlearn/free-courses

Preventing Radicalisation

Many practitioners are concerned about preventing radicalisation – this module will help raise awareness and covers concerns that a:

  • person is at risk of radicalisation
  • venue is being used for promoting extremism
  • speaker at a public or council venue is promoting extremism.

The Education and Training Foundation have developed a suite of free online training modules designed for further education and training providers to raise awareness of their responsibilities in complying with the Prevent duty. This is in recognition that all staff, governors and board members are required to be Prevent duty trained. The modules provide awareness training in the context of Prevent duty responsibilities in further education.

Research in Practice e-learning modules

Research in Practice (RiP) is retiring its e-learning on 1st March 2019; after this date all e-learning will be removed from their website. RiP now offer online learning using alternative methods such as webinars (both live and recorded), podcasts and blogs, to provide up-to-date and accessible learning opportunities on key topics.

SCIE videos – Strengths-based approach

The Social Care Institute for Excellence (SCIE) has published a series of videos looking at strengths-based approaches to social care. Resources include a case study of how the approach, which focuses on identifying strengths as well as needs and difficulties, is used in supporting young people in transition to adult social care.

Real Safeguarding Stories online resource

A free online resource for professionals with safeguarding responsibilities has been developed by Bradford Council and Collingwood Learning. Each of this series of videos is based upon stories from the people involved or through anonymised cases. Some stories have been edited and some have been combined to cover the key issues in a simple, quick, and powerful way. But everything is based upon real people, and real situations.

Self-Harm and Risky Behaviour

The MindEdSelf-Harm and Risky Behaviour‘ online module is aimed at a universal audience and provides the background to self harm in children and teenagers, common associated conditions and the optimal approach to managing it in the community.

Social work tools & resources for direct work with children & adults 

Aimed at social workers, but useful for everyone, these resources cover a range of issues such as adoption & fostering, alcohol, assessment, bullying, CSE & sexual abuse, disability & health, domestic abuse, drugs, finances, law (UK), mental health, parenting and safety.

Suicide prevention

We need to talk about suicide: helping everyone to feel more confident to talk about suicide is an e-Learning programme that has been developed for the wider public health workforce including voluntary sector, blue light services, prison staff and prison listeners health and social care. It was developed by a range of experts including experts by experience i.e. those people who have attempted to take their own lives and those bereaved and affected by suicide.

The learning is specifically aimed at making sure that everyone in contact with the public, in whatever role, knows how to spot any signs of mental distress and feel comfortable in talking about suicide.

Talking about suicide can be used as a normal part of all our interactions at home, in the workplace and in the wider community.

Understanding Young Minds free online course

Virtual College have worked in partnership with SelfharmUK to create a free online course designed to help parents talk about the issue of self-harm with their children.

Virtual College have produced a range of free e-learning courses in subjects such as Safeguarding Children, Health and Well-Being, Understanding Animal Welfare in Violent Homes, An Introduction to GDPR, Understanding Young Minds, Female Genital Mutilation,  Keep Them Safe: Protecting Children from CSE, Awareness of Forced Marriage, Awareness of Type 1 Diabetes and Get Moving, Get Healthy.
