Safeguarding Policy – advice for partners

As part of the Manchester Safeguarding Standard, the MSAB and MSCB require all partners to have safeguarding policies and procedures that are compliant with MSAB and/or MSCB safeguarding procedures.

Guidelines for putting together a safeguarding policy for your organisation

• Refer to the Care Act 2014 or Working Together 2018 – the definitive sources for safeguarding advice and containing both statutory guidance and non statutory practice guidance.
• Each agency should identify a safeguarding lead whose details are well publicised throughout the organisation.
• Clear arrangements should be put in place for regular monitoring and supervision, with a defined escalation procedure.
• Staff should have access to ‘Reporting concerns‘ and ‘What to do if you’re worried a child or adult is being abused’ information.
• Staff should familiarise themselves with common indicators of abuse – more information is available on this website.
• Staff should be encouraged to attend safeguarding training regularly – visit the MSB training website for further information.
• Steps should be taken to ensure accurate, secure recording mechanisms: make a clear written record of all observations, actions and conversations. Record carefully what the adult or child says in their own words. Keep sensitive information locked away or password protected.
• Special provision should be made for adults or children with impaired communication – see disabilities guidance for more information.
• Publicise information on how to make a referral to Social Care and the Safeguarding Referral Forms and guidance.
• Procedures should be put in place regarding managing allegations against staff and safer recruitment.
• Make guidance on Information Sharing available, with the emphasis on putting the best interests of the adult or child first.
• Where there are no immediate safeguarding concerns but additional needs have been identified, consideration should be given to early help.
• Undertake regular audits to ensure that systems are working effectively and procedures are being followed.
